Our History
Refreshing Spring Church of God in Christ was founded in 1937 by Bishop Archie D. Headen—a man of extraordinary vision, unwavering faith, and a heart fully committed to God. What began as a small gathering in Washington, D.C. quickly blossomed into a vibrant ministry under his anointed leadership. From its humble beginnings, the church moved faithfully through four locations across the city—each move marking a season of growth, greater impact, and spiritual expansion. Wherever it was planted, the power of God moved mightily, drawing souls to Christ and transforming lives through the Word and the Spirit.
In 1969, Refreshing Spring settled at its current home in Riverdale, Maryland, continuing the legacy of excellence in ministry that Bishop Headen established. His labor laid a foundation that still holds strong today—one of holiness, compassion, and unshakable faith. After his passing in 1993, leadership passed to Bishop James E. Jordan, Jr., who was appointed in 1994 as only the second pastor in the church’s rich history. Bishop Jordan has carried the mantle with grace and strength, ushering in new growth while preserving the spiritual depth that defines Refreshing Spring. For over 85 years, we have remained a church anchored in prayer, rooted in legacy, and committed to ministering to the whole man—spirit, soul, and body.
